What is it about the transgender spy that makes it an irresistible subject for movies and plays? Inspired by kabuki and the life of the Chevalier D’Eon, a spy and diplomat favored by Louis XV until he was forced to flee to London and earn his living in a circus, Eonnagata is a dance-theater hybrid created and performed by star French ballerina Sylvie Guillem, renowned Canadian choreographer Russell Maliphant, and Canadian theatrical wizard Robert Lepage. Onnagata in kabuki refers to male actors who specialize in female roles.
