The Conference of Birds 2026 With Kensaku Tanikawa

Oct 31, 2026 at 1:00pm ~ Nov 01, 2026 at 2:00pm

Tokyo troupe TAICHI-KIKAKU brings the complete version of its physical theater piece The Conference of Birds to Ekarabako for three shows over Halloween weekend.

The company calls its style shintaishi (body poetry), using movement, humor and imagination instead of dialogue, so no Japanese is needed to follow along. Since 1988, it has performed in 100 cities across 25 countries.

Composer and pianist Kensaku Tanikawa accompanies the performance live. Many of the “hand birds” that fly across the stage are modeled on the hands of Minamisoma residents displaced after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, a community the troupe has worked with for more than a decade.
