STILL: Contemporary Art Exhibition in Shinjuku

Fuji Gallery Shinjuku presents “STILL | Forms That Remain,” a group exhibition running from Sept. 16 to Oct. 31, 2026.
The Shinjuku art exhibition features Ayumi Aoki, Kiyomi Irie, Romana Machin Tanimura and Seiko Matsushita. Together, their works examine what it means for something to remain.
What Does It Mean to Remain?
“STILL | Forms That Remain” looks beyond the simple opposition between change and permanence.
Instead, the exhibition considers continuity, retention, accumulation, stagnation and restraint. It also considers transformations that happen without being immediately visible.
Existing works by Ayumi Aoki, Kiyomi Irie and Seiko Matsushita are reconsidered through this framework. Romana Machin Tanimura presents new pieces created in direct response to the theme.
The result brings four different approaches to the same question: what actually remains when time, materials or circumstances change?
Four Artists Approach “STILL” Differently
Aoki works across painting and layered paper-based compositions. Her practice often combines acrylic, paper and pencil to build images through overlapping surfaces.
Irie studied oil painting at Tama Art University and works primarily with painting. Her practice has been shown in exhibitions and art fairs across Asia and Europe.
Tanimura works across painting and sculpture. Her previous works have incorporated materials such as spray polyurethane foam, glue sticks and ceramics.
Matsushita has worked across installation, painting, sculpture, photography, performance and animation since the 1990s. Her practice has examined conflict, resistance and the social pressures placed on women.
The four artists previously exhibited together at Fuji Gallery Shinjuku in 2025. That exhibition, “A-Chroma: Black, White and In-Between,” focused on works made without overt color information.
“STILL” shifts the focus from color to duration and persistence.
Contemporary Art at Fuji Gallery Shinjuku
Fuji Gallery Shinjuku is located on the B1F of Hilton Tokyo in Nishi-Shinjuku.
The gallery’s standard hours are 10am–6pm, and it is closed Monday and Tuesday. Check the gallery website for any changes during the exhibition period.
The gallery is about a 2-minute walk from Nishi-Shinjuku Station’s C8 Exit. Tochomae Station is also nearby.
