Kagurazaka Machitobi Festa 2026
Oct 12, 2026 at 1:00pm ~ Oct 12, 2026 at 2:45pm
Dance unit Tainoko performs and leads a beginner-friendly workshop at Zenkoku-ji Temple on Oct 12.
A Hometown Stage
On Monday, Oct 12, Kagurazaka Machitobi Festa 2026 welcomes Tainoko, a duo specializing in nihon buyo (traditional Japanese dance). The pair will appear in the shoin (study hall) of Bishamonten Zenkoku-ji. The temple is dedicated to Bishamonten, one of the Seven Lucky Gods.
Kagurazaka was once one of Tokyo’s best-known hanamachi (geisha districts). Its stone-paved alleys, ryotei (traditional restaurants) and small shops still carry traces of that era.
Both members study at Tokyo University of the Arts. At the 83rd National Dance Competition, they took first and second place in the classical category’s first division.
The Art of Nihon Buyo
Developed alongside kabuki theater, nihon buyo blends refined gestures, precise footwork and expressive use of props such as folding fans to tell stories drawn from seasons, folklore and everyday life. Seeing it performed up close, in a quiet temple room rather than a large theater, offers a rare chance to notice the small details that give each movement its meaning.
Try It Yourself
The program opens with a 45-minute recital at 1 p.m., followed at 2 p.m. by a hands-on session where participants learn simple steps set to “Sakura Sakura,” a folk song celebrating cherry blossoms and one of Japan’s most recognizable melodies. No experience or Japanese-language skills are required, making the workshop an easy introduction for newcomers, families and travelers.
