MODE
Jul 29, 2026 at 7:00pm ~ Jul 30, 2026 at 10:00pm
MODE returns to Tokyo this June with two evenings of experimental music and sound art at Sogetsu Hall. The international arts platform brings together leading figures in avant-garde and contemporary music for world premieres, rare collaborations and innovative performances.
June 29 Program
- Keiji Haino and Daniel Blumberg — Japanese avant-garde musician Keiji Haino joins Oscar-winning composer Daniel Blumberg (The Brutalist) for the world premiere of a newly commissioned work. Both are celebrated for their improvisational and genre-defying approaches to music.
- Ellen Arkbro and Reigakusha Gagaku Ensemble — Swedish composer Ellen Arkbro presents a new work for reed organ and hichiriki (Japanese fue). Members of the Reigakusha Gagaku Ensemble will perform alongside her, bringing together experimental music and Japan’s ancient gagaku tradition.
June 30 Program
- Charlemagne Palestine — Experimental music pioneer Charlemagne Palestine returns to Japan for the first time in 14 years. The New York avant-garde icon is known for immersive drone-based performances built on resonance and repetition. Jim O’Rourke and Eiko Ishibashi will also join the program.
Founded in London in 2018, MODE fosters cultural exchange through experimental artistic practices. Its programs connect artists and audiences through music, sound art and interdisciplinary performance.
