Since November 11 shows up on the calendar as four 1s standing in a row, a group of bar owners decided it is the perfect day to celebrate that venerable Tokyo institution, the standing bar. Then they went one better and made Standing Bar Day a full week. Drinkers are welcome to explore over 150 bars in six areas of Tokyo including Shibuya, Naka-Meguro and Shimbashi during the the event running November 11-17. Each establishment is offering a drink and signature snack for a ticket, which can be purchased in sets of three for ¥2,300 online or ¥2,500 at designated bars in each area. A bar without stools is one where you are encouraged to mingle with the crowd—and you won’t have to worry if there will be seats free at your next stop.
