A father and son (Rainn Wilson & Devin Brochu) paralyzed with grief at the recent loss of Mom are descended upon by the title character (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), an antisocial headbanger whose unconventional manners and anarchic antics eventually (somehow) pull them out of their life-threatening funk. Kind of like a violent, foul-mouthed, pothead Nanny McPhee with DIY tats who resembles Charles Manson. Co-producer Natalie Portman has a throwaway role because, well, she’s co-producer. Starts off well, but the vulgarity soon gets repetitive and the film bogs down, becoming downright mawkish by the third act.
