Tokyo Marathon 2027

Mar 07, 2027 at 9:10am ~ Mar 07, 2027 at 5:00pm

The Tokyo Marathon turns 20 in 2027, and organizers are marking the milestone with the race’s biggest edition yet.

Held under the theme “The Day Tokyo Becomes One,” the marathon takes place Sunday, March 7, 2027, starting at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku and finishing near Tokyo Station, with the route passing through Ginza, Asakusa, and Nihonbashi along the way.

This year’s field grows to a record 40,000 runners, up from 39,000, and the men’s and women’s elite champions will race for a $170,000 prize, the largest payout in Abbott World Marathon Majors history. Every finisher will receive a specially designed 20th Anniversary Premium Edition medal to mark the occasion, and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force’s Blue Impulse aerobatic team is set to perform a demonstration flight over the city in conjunction with the race.

Registration opened June 24, 2026, with deadlines varying by category. Charity runner donation applications run through July 9, with charity entries following from July 14 to August 13. Semi-elite “RUN as ONE” applications and general member entries both run from July 31 to August 13. Entry costs ¥19,800 for Japan residents and $230 for overseas applicants, including handling fees and tax.

As one of just six Abbott World Marathon Majors and the only one held in Asia, Tokyo Marathon draws elite athletes and tens of thousands of amateur runners each year, backed by millions of spectators lining the course.
