“We were happier long ago when we lived naked,” posits artist and photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto. With a view that contemporary clothing has become a kind of prison, Sugimoto offers an unusual imaginary tour through the development of clothing from prehistoric times. The renowned artist accomplishes this via a series of Stylized Sculptures, or photographs of dioramas that bring to life the evolution of clothing from the Neanderthals on, leading to the straightjacket that Sugimoto believes to be present-day clothing.
