In 1976, shogekijo (small theater) pioneer Tadashi Suzuki ditched Tokyo in favor of a remote mountain village in Toyama Prefecture. The Suzuki Company of Toga, which hews to the acting theories developed by its founder, will be heading back to the capital for a pair of Tokyo premieres this month. SCOT’s quadrilingual version of King Lear, featuring actors from Japan, Germany, Korea and the US, was well received at its world premiere at the 2009 Toga Festival. Dionysus, inspired by Euripides’ Bacchae, attracted similar acclaim when the company performed it across Europe last spring.
