If your kids or significant other escape from watchful eyes to open the measly PB&J you pack for their midday repast, you may want to seek the assistance of Tomomi Maruo, a home cook who has elevated the boxed lunch to an artform with her charaben (character bento). Maruo has just published a book in Japanese, revealing how she transforms a few lumps of rice and cold cuts into adorable teddy bears, bunny rabbits and city buses. Maruo also gives group classes at various locations and can instruct in English. Get a group of four or more together and you can decide which character to create. Lessons are ¥1,500 each and include lunch, a dessert and materials. Of course, learners are welcome to take home what they make.
