Masako and Toshiko Yamamoto in front of what’s left of Toshiko’s home. Toshiko survived the tsunami on the second floor of her house, which was slightly sheltered by a factory that stood between it and the ocean. The next block was entirely destroyed.


Ishinomaki Volunteer Center dispatching workers to help survivors salvage what they can from their homes. Volunteers register in the morning and are sent in groups of ten. Dangerous debris and mud must be cleared to allow homeowners to access their valuables.
