This one is firmly in the “WTF did I just watch?” category. Two business rivals (Josh Sharp & Aaron Jackson) discover that they’re long-lost, gay twin brothers and decide to switch places in an effort to get their divorced parents back together. I’d expound on that thumbnail, but it never gets any deeper.
What it does do is get madly antic and unapologetically puerile. It’s one of those crude, rude and aggressive movies that was probably a lot more fun to make than it is to watch. Loud and crass may make for a good midnight movie, but it’s not the same as actually being funny or clever. It’s directed by Larry Charles, who had a hand in producing and directing Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Go figure.
Definite plusses are Nathan Lane and Will & Grace’s Megan Mullally as the aforementioned divorced folks. Every shtick they do together is an instant classic. Megan Thee Stallion, as their boss, belts out an energetic, empowering number, and Bowen Yang never fails to entertain. Everyone gets to say fuck a lot.
Ironically, the film’s weakest point is the two leads (co-writers of the original half-hour skit), who never met a scene they couldn’t annoyingly overact. This self-impressed romp gets credit for taking the Big Swing and being precisely the movie the filmmakers wanted it to be. Whether it’s one you want to watch
without being very drunk may be a different matter. (86 min)
