Loath as I am to praise Disney, I do applaud its approach in its recent animations to the sensibilities and beliefs of native peoples. Movies like the 2016 Moana, Coco, Brave and Encanto. So for this cash gra… sequel, the Mouse House doubles down on the spiritual stuff. Swell. If only they had come up with something better than a mere remake, a muted version of the original. Consumer product. I got bored.
Even so, this one offers imaginative and dynamic imagery that will thrill the kiddies, some songs of varying worth (Lin-Manuel Miranda was not involved this time), cutely oddball new characters and a few funny bits. There’s nothing really wrong with it, but alongside the original Moana, it will not be especially remembered as anything but a very good babysitter flick. (100 min)
