I’m ashamed, a little, to admit that I’m strangely gratified by the fact that China’s most expensive movie to date is also one of history’s biggest money losers (north of $100 million at this writing). The plot, for want of a better word, has Matt Damon as a mercenary in China seeking the secret to gunpowder and getting roped into helping the natives defend the title barrier (which Mexico is not paying for either) against… no, not the Mongols, but hordes of computer-generated monster beasties. This crumbling turkey makes 47 Ronin look like art. Visionary director Yimou Zhang can and has made far better movies. (103 min)
