USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage

It takes talent to make this story this dull

The title cruiser was tasked in 1945 with delivering an atomic bomb to Tinian Island and the Enola Gay. As the mission was top secret, she was sent unescorted. On her way home, she was sunk by a Japanese sub, whereupon a few hundred floating survivors took turns getting eaten by sharks. To top it off, the Navy scapegoated the skipper and court marshaled him for letting his unguarded ship get sunk. It’s a good story, and deserves a better telling than this overlong Nicolas Cage-produced melodramatic mess directed by the once promising Mario Van Peebles (New Jack City). Worst war movie in recent memory. Japanese title: Pacific War. (128 min)
