Both with his own company (dubbed OM-2) and as head of Kagurazaka performance space Die Pratze, Shigeo Makabe produces some of Japan’s most arresting avant-garde theater and dance. A highlight of the Die Pratze calendar is its New Figure Dance Festival, which runs through the end of the week at ancillary venue D-Soko in Nippori. Four different troupes—many of whose members are in their 20s—will appear each night over the course of a week. They include new unit M + M featuring Brazilian dancer Nadya Moretto D’almeida (right), a trio debuting Yukiko Sakada’s Tomeru, and another trio presenting Tokyo City Ballet choreographer Yukio Tomino’s Tiara The Beauty~Nemurenai~Bijo.
