“Tokyo definitely doesn’t need another select shop,” pronounced Monocle editor-in-chief Tyler Brûlé last month, in an interview which our MP3 player conveniently decided not to record. Brûlé was in town for the opening of the new Aoyama Francfranc store, a warehouse-like emporium of designer furnishings that also provides a home to Tokyo’s very own branch of The Monocle Shop. The petite space sells the fruits of Monocle’s collaborations with brands including Comme des Garçons (Scent One: Hinoki cologne, ¥12,600), Matsuyama (Sugi Body Soap, ¥3,500) and Skeppshult (V-Bike, ¥114,000), plus bespoke products and back issues of the magazine at eye-watering prices.
The Monocle Shop Tokyo, inside Francfranc Village: 3-11-13 Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku. Open daily 11am-10pm. tokyoshop@monocle.com
