We’d never suggest that commercial enterprises are out to, y’know, squeeze as much money as possible out of loyal customers, but a recent pronouncement by one of Sony’s execs raised some eyebrows.
In an interview with the GameBusiness website, Sony Computer Entertainment product planner Naoya Matsui claimed the imminent PSP Go, with its total lack of disk drives, is the culmination of Sony’s plans for the handheld gamer.
In stating that killing off the proprietary UMD drive (and its game disks) in favor of downloads was planned since the PSP appeared in 2004, Matsui is trying the patience of millions of fanboys with UMD libraries. Then again, maybe the shiny little disks will become collectors’ items?
