More than just a bunch of foreign rockers living in Japan, The Watanabes style themselves as “a genuine gaijin band,” one whose music has been shaped by their experiences as expats. Perhaps for this reason, debut album Independent Social Power has found itself featured at Tower Records, while the band’s folksy guitar pop and chronicles of their mishaps in rural Ehime Prefecture have earned them a spot in the BBC Introducing Series. Led by two English brothers, with a New Zealander, Belgian and Swede in the mix for good measure, The Watanabes next bring their act to the Gaijin Sounds event at Ebisu expat watering hole What The Dickens.
