British trio The XX’s eponymous debut was one of the most widely praised albums of 2009, an unlikely blend of The Cure, electro-pop and contemporary R&B. Barely into their 20s, the group’s members have been friends since preschool, and bring a genuine sense of intimacy to their hushed songs of love and loneliness. Having spent most of the past year touring the globe, they’ve had plenty of time to hone their (initially uneven) live show in preparation for their Tokyo debut this month. Perhaps the audience will include members of The XX’s own Japanese tribute band, The OO, whose stilted cover versions have made them minor MySpace celebrities.
