DoCoMo fans moving back to the US anytime after the end of the year might not have to give up their beloved keitai, after it emerged that the Japanese cellphone giant may be planning to set up shop there.

To save on the gargantuan cost of building a physical network of masts and the like, DoCoMo will probably become a “virtual” operator and lease bandwidth from either AT&T or T-Mobile.

It won’t be the first time Big D has dabbled in overseas markets, but this time it’s all about the handsets. Whether or not you like the feature-packed Japanese models, makers like Sharp and Panasonic are keen for a friendly operator in the West willing to sell them to new markets. Hence, the fact that we can believe this rumor in a heartbeat.
