Azabu-Juban Noryo Matsuri

Azabu-Juban’s biggest event of the year returns for its 60th edition on Aug. 22-23. The shopping street closes to cars and fills with hundreds of food stalls for the neighborhood’s noryo matsuri [cool of the evening festival]. Held since the mid-1960s, it now draws close to 300,000 visitors over the two days, more than most neighborhood festivals in Tokyo.
Food is the draw here more than any shrine ritual. Shops from the shopping street and restaurants from around Japan set up alongside prefectural tents selling regional specialties, from Hokkaido seafood to Kyushu pork. A stage runs performances and dance through the afternoon and evening, with craft booths and games for kids.
Both days run from 3 pm to 9 pm, rain or shine unless the weather turns severe. Entry is free. Azabu-Juban Station puts you right in the middle of it, a two-minute walk from the crowds on the Toei Oedo or Namboku line. Get there early if you want to sit anywhere; by evening the street is shoulder to shoulder, and that’s most of the appeal.
