Gerhard Oppitz returns to Tokyo for a piano recital at Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall on Nov. 25, 2026.

The program focuses on Beethoven and Brahms, two composers central to Oppitz’s career. Doors open at 6:15pm, with the recital starting at 7pm.

Beethoven’s “Pathétique” and “Moonlight” Sonatas

The published program begins with Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13, known as the “Pathétique.”

Oppitz will later perform Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27, No. 2. Commonly called the “Moonlight,” it contains one of Beethoven’s most recognizable opening movements.

Oppitz studied Beethoven’s sonatas and concertos with German pianist Wilhelm Kempff after meeting him in 1973. Kempff became an important influence on his approach to the composer.

Brahms’ Late Miniatures and Third Piano Sonata

The recital also includes Brahms’ Six Piano Pieces, Op. 118. Brahms completed the collection late in his life, combining compact intermezzos with more forceful pieces.

The evening closes with Brahms’ Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor, Op. 5. Written when Brahms was 20, it is the longest of his three piano sonatas.

Together, the selections show two different sides of Brahms. Op. 118 is concise and reflective, while the sonata works on a much larger scale.

Who Is Gerhard Oppitz?

Gerhard Oppitz was born in Bavaria in 1953. He began playing piano at 5 and gave a public concerto performance at 11.

In 1977, he won first prize at the second Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition. He became the youngest professor in the Munich university’s history in 1981.

Oppitz has since performed with the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra and London Symphony Orchestra. His discography includes more than 80 recordings.

Japanese audiences may know Oppitz from his extensive Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann and Brahms concert series. His Beethoven sonata performances and lessons were also broadcast by NHK in 1994.

All seats are reserved. Standard tickets range from ¥4,500 to ¥6,500.

The U25 ticket is available to audience members aged 25 or younger. Buyers may select from available S, A or B seats and must show identification at the performance.

Getting to Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall

Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall is on the 3rd floor of Tokyo Opera City.

The closest station is Hatsudai on the Keio New Line. Use the east exit for the 5-minute walk to the hall.

Hatsudai is the first stop from Shinjuku Station. The Keio New Line uses a different platform from the regular Keio Line.

Paid parking is available beneath Tokyo Opera City. The official rate is ¥300 for 30 minutes.
