“Now and Then” Documentary screening
Oct 25, 2026 at 2:00pm ~ Oct 25, 2026 at 5:00pm
AITEN screens “Now and Then,” director Takashi Nishihara’s new documentary on Japan and its foreign residents, on Sunday, October 25.
The film connects two events a century apart. One is the massacre of Korean and Chinese residents after the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake. The other is the 2023 revision of Japan’s immigration law and its effect on refugees and asylum seekers.
Activists working on both issues anchor the story. They include a university student who founded a refugee support group on campus and her father, a Tokyo pastor who has served as guarantor for more than 200 people on provisional release.
The screening is in Japanese with English subtitles. Nishihara stays afterward for a Q&A and a discussion on discrimination and related issues.
