“To The Sky” Exhibition at WHAT CAFE

Jul 03, 2026 at 6:30pm ~ Jul 20, 2026 at 5:00pm

British artist Tobias Ross-Southall is included in a new group exhibition at WHAT CAFE: U40 Emerging Directors & Curators Under40.

Created during a residency in Puebla, Mexico, “To The Sky” presents a new series of paintings and monotype prints exploring memory, mortality and human connection.

Borrowing its title from a Mexican expression “Hasta El Cielo” (To The Sky) of enduring affection and remembrance, the exhibition considers the body as a landscape of memory, where love, grief and longing persist beyond physical presence. Figures emerge and dissolve, suspended between figuration and abstraction, presence and absence.

Across the works, personal memory becomes entwined with broader questions of contemporary existence, reflecting on what it means to remain human in an increasingly post-human era.

Tobias Ross-Southall is an award-winning British artist, filmmaker and curator from London, currently based in Puebla, Mexico. He has exhibited in; London, Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Maastricht and Mexico City.

He has been featured in; Forbes, Financial Times, Condé Naste, The Guardian, Vogue, Marvin, Marie Claire, Nowness, AnOther & Studio International.

Tobias Ross-Southall studied Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, London and the Pratt Institute, New York.
