The solo exhibition Visionaire Thread celebrates artist Hidemi Shimura‘s 20-year-long career as a fibre artist. Not heard of fibre art? Fibre art is a genre of contemporary art that uses materials such as thread, fabric, felt and yarn. Though it is gaining recognition internationally, fiber art is still relatively unfamiliar in Japan.

The colorful combinations of embroidery threads create a visually impactful experience where the artworks change expression depending on angle and light. What seems chaotic up close may, from a little distance, emerge as a beautiful landscape. Thread may seem delicate—it can be cut easily with scissors—yet it is surprisingly strong when pulled by hand.

The exhibition Visionaire Thread features both two-dimensional works, and three-dimensional pieces that visitors can touch and interact with. Both children and adults are encouraged to attend.
