Wagashi and the Aesthetics of Tea—Nerikiri & Matcha Experience

Jul 09, 2026 at 2:00pm ~ Jul 09, 2026 at 3:00pm

This Wagashi and Tea Workshop at Tokyo National Museum starts with guests shaping their own nerikiri confection by hand. Wagashi instructor Momoko Sazawa guides each step. The room stays quiet and the pace stays slow. Everything happens in English, start to finish.

Shaping Nerikiri and Whisking Matcha

The session opens with the instructor and the season’s theme. Guests then shape one nerikiri confection with Sazawa’s support. A tea demonstration follows next. Guests whisk their own matcha right after watching.

Tasting the Finished Wagashi

The final step is tasting. Guests eat the confection they shaped. They pair it with their own matcha and a small dry sweet. The whole experience runs about 60 minutes from start to finish.

A Hands-On Look at Wagashi and Tea Culture

This Wagashi and Tea Workshop at Tokyo National Museum suits visitors with no background in Japanese tea culture. Sazawa explains the stories and gestures behind wagashi as guests work. The session pairs naturally with the museum’s kumihimo workshop next door, run on the same quiet, small-group format.
