San Francisco artist Yarrow Slaps presents his first solo exhibition in Japan with “Breaking News” at Sho+1.

Drawing on the scrolling ticker of TV news, the series pairs his layered paintings of acrylic, airbrush and oil stick with tongue-in-cheek headline banners.

Topics range from armed conflict to millennials unwinding with iced matcha and sound baths, along with a reimagining of San Francisco neighborhoods inspired by the way Japanese towns are each known for a local specialty. The result mixes social critique with humor and warmth.

Slaps, a 2025 Eureka Fellowship recipient, will attend the opening reception, which also features his video and music work.
