High Strung

Dreadful dialogue, divine dancing

A hunky, undocumented British violin player (Nicholas Galitzine) busking in the New York subway cute-meets an adorable ballet ingénue (Keenan Kampa), leading to several classical-contemporary dance and music mash-ups and of course the Big Final Competition. Michael Damian’s film features several excellent music and dance numbers that are innovative, well choreographed and dynamically filmed. But everything in between is so phenomenally contrived it can be viewed as comic relief. It’s the kind of film you’re best off renting and fast-forwarding through all the talking. (96 min)
