Both one of the richest and most expensive cities on the planet, Abu Dhabi is home to the world’s first vending machine that, unsurprisingly, sells solid gold. As salaries and bond values shrink, the machine’s makers argue, the best strategy is to invest in something, well, solid. And now the concept is spreading to Japan. Space International, a company hitherto best known for producing novelty USB drives, has acquired one of the machines for display in its Hatchobori offices (3-6-1 Hatchobori, Chuo-ku). The jihanki, known as Space Gold, contains a variety of gold bullion coins and bars that are available for purchase with either cash or credit cards. Prices are updated daily based on market fluctuations.
