Photographer Leo Rubinfien experienced 9/11 at his home near the World Trade Center in New York. His response to the event as an artist was to visit cities around the world that have also sustained attacks by terrorists. The Chicago-born 58-year-old spent six years pointing his lens at the faces of people in the streets, looking for messages in cities from Manila to Istanbul. The anxiety and suspicion of their expressions portrays what it means to live in one of Rubinfien’s 21st century “Wounded Cities.”
