At least 47 people are now known to have died in Saturday’s eruption of Mount Ontake, Japan’s second-largest volcano, located on the border between Nagano and Gifu prefectures. The victims have been found to have died largely from stones ejected by the initial explosive eruption. Rescue workers searching the aftermath of what has now become Japan’s worst volcanic disaster in 88 years discovered five bodies stuck between jagged boulders up to 3 meters across, which had to be smashed using specialized rock-breaking tools.
