It is of course a matter of taste, but no one can deny that Nicole Kidman is near the top of the film industry’s best actress list, and she continues to bolster that status with her impressive versatility and courage to try new things.
In this steamy little film from Dutch director Halina Reijn, she’s a high-powered tech CEO who has everything. Her husband (Antonio Banderas) is a successful playwright, and her two kids are smart and well adjusted.
But something’s missing that she can’t quite identify – until she begins a torrid affair with a much younger intern (Harris Dickenson). She’s not looking for mere sexual satisfaction, to demonstrate her power, or to experience the risk of getting caught. Of course I’m not going to tell you what it is, but understand that this one is for grown-ups, addressing such complex topics as gender dynamics in the #metoo era and BDSM.
Date movie? Hell yes, especially if you’re looking for some interesting post-screening conversation. (114 min)
