In this high-concept melodrama, two workers (Nicholas Hoult & Kristen Stewart) living in a world where emotion has been drugged out of the populace fall in love when a mysterious disease restores their humanity, causing all kinds of social problems. The film has an icy beauty, and the shooting locations, especially Singapore’s Henderson Waves, are fascinating. And cameos by Guy Pearce and Jacki Weaver don’t hurt. But this is primarily a mood piece, and it’s all been done before and far better (for example Gattica, The Lobster, Fahrenheit 451). Takes itself way to seriously. Bored my socks off. (101 min)
