Seymour: An Introduction

...to an interesting, inspirational guy

Nonagenarian Seymour Bernstein, once a noted concert pianist and now a piano teacher of rare insight, is a quiet and gentle man to whom life and art are one and the same thing. Director Ethan Hawke wisely lets Seymour run with it in this meditation on art and the practice of craft. Seymour dispenses wit and wisdom (e.g. the pop-culture tendency to value talent over craft), and speaks of the personal gratification one can achieve through art. Time spent in his gentle and wise man’s company, even if only in a cinematic portrait, is time well spent. Somehow, by the end, you want to hear more. Seymour’s the real deal. (84 min)
