The Timeless Journey of Oris Watches

Watchmaking excellence from Switzerland to Japan

By

Since its inception in 1904, Oris has been synonymous with Swiss watchmaking excellence. Founded by Paul Cattin and Georges Christian in the quaint town of Hölstein, Switzerland, Oris began its journey in a converted factory. Its goal was to create high-quality timepieces at accessible prices. Over a century later, Oris remains a bastion of independent watchmaking, cherished for its commitment to mechanical craftsmanship and innovative spirit.

The Evolution of an Icon

Oris’s history is marked by milestones that have cemented its reputation in the world of horology. The company’s early years saw rapid growth, and it established multiple factories to meet rising demand. By the 1930s, Oris had become one of Switzerland’s largest watch manufacturers.

The post-World War II era saw Oris navigating the challenges of the quartz revolution. Unlike many of its competitors, Oris resolutely adhered to mechanical watchmaking, a decision that has paid dividends in the contemporary market, where mechanical watches are celebrated for their artistry and engineering.

In 1968, Oris received the highest accolade from the Observatory of Neuchâtel for the precision of its watches. This achievement underscored Oris’s dedication to excellence and innovation, qualities that continue to define the brand today.

Professional-Grade Diving Capabilities

Today, Oris is renowned for several signature innovations that have set it apart in the competitive watchmaking industry. Among these is the Oris Aquis collection, celebrated for its robust design and professional-grade diving capabilities. The Big Crown series, with its oversized crown and aviation-inspired aesthetics, is another iconic line that has garnered a dedicated following.

It simultaneously values community and independence. For Oris, independence describes its spirit as an independently owned Swiss watch company, meaning it is free to go its own way, to make watches the way it likes, and to innovate and collaborate in line with its values, rather than those of a distant group of shareholders.

Commitment to Sustainability

Recently, Oris has made significant strides in sustainable watchmaking. The Oris Aquis Date Relief, for instance, supports environmental initiatives aimed at preserving the world’s oceans. This commitment to sustainability not only enhances the brand’s appeal but also reflects a forward-thinking approach that resonates with modern consumers.

“We call this attitude “Change for the Better”,” the Oris team explains in their official booklet, Moments in Time, “and it influences everything we do, from making watches to supporting NGOs and individual agents of change.”

In 2021, Oris was independently certified by ClimatePartner as climate neutral, and followed that with the annual Oris Sustainability Report and the Oris Emissions Reduction Programme, which pledges to reduce the company’s global emissions by 10 percent a year for three years.
