Tell us about your background.
I come from Bogota, the capital of Colombia. After graduating as an Industrial Engineer, I went to Oxford University, where I got a diploma in Economic Development. I was elected member of the City Council of Bogota and for six years, before arriving in Tokyo in 2007, I was the president of the Colombian National Bankers Association. I am the mother of three children who have enjoyed very much the experience of living in Japan.

How did you feel when you found out you’d be posted to Japan?
I have always found Japan fascinating and have had strong ties with the country for a long time. I first came in 1987 to take part in a program with the EXIM Bank. I also have close family members who have been living here for many years, which makes Japan, in many ways, my second home.

Tell us about the upcoming bicentennial celebrations in Tokyo.
Tokyo will join another 40 capital cities worldwide to commemorate the bicentennial of the independence of Colombia with an outstanding concert. The salsa group Calambuco will be coming from Colombia exclusively for this performance. Other local Latin-American musicians, such as Armonia Jean and Combo Creacion, as well as members of the Colombian community in Japan, will be performing not only salsa but other rhythms such as merengue and vallenato. Delicious food and crafts will also be available. This event, which will take place in July 18 at Hibiya Park from noon-6pm, will be an excellent chance to dance and celebrate with the warmth of Colombian people.

What’s something everyone should do in Japan before they leave?
One of the memories that I cherish the most was my visit to Koyasan, the center of Shingon Buddhism, located in Wakayama Prefecture. It is one of the most magical places I have ever visited. It has a very special and calm atmosphere, and embodies the beauty of Japanese spirituality.
