Zevs at The Container

Appropriating logos for his own artistic ends

Originally published on metropolis.co.jp on June 2013

Tokyo’s most unusual exhibition space is now hosting the work of cutting-edge street artist Zevs. Starting in the mid-’90s, the young French artist gained international recognition for appropriating famous brand logos to criticize our era’s rampant consumerism. For the current show, Zevs re-envisions German painter Lucas Cranach the Younger’s famous Renaissance painting Adam and Eve in the context of the Apple store in New York. The exhibition space is a literal shipping container at a hair salon created by expat Israeli curator Shai Ohayon, who also brings Tokyo the unconventional Art Gig events.
