Tokyo has a fair bit of expatriate theater, but little devoted to new work. Black Stripe Theater has now chosen to present Caryl Churchill’s meditation on human cloning, which debuted in 2002 and was adapted for television by the BBC and HBO in 2008. A Number follows the tortured relations between a father and his sons Bernard 1, Bernard 2, and Michael Black, the first two of which are clones of the third. Directed by Black Stripe’s Walter Roberts, the production stars Antun Percic and Chris Parham.
