Founded in 1919 in Weimar, Germany, the Bauhaus design school sought to reunite art and industry by returning to the crafts—and, in the process, to create a more humane society. Under the leadership of Walter Gropius and then Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Bauhaus became perhaps the most influential design movement of the 20th century. At a time when the role of women in Japan is undergoing rapid change, this exhibition’s examination of Bauhaus designs for modern lifestyles is certainly timely.
