“Suzuki” ranks second only to “Sato” as the most common surname in Japan, and members of the clan are understandably proud. Last month saw the unveiling of a Suzuki Association in Hamamatsu, the city with the most Suzukis. Around 40 people attended the launch party, with music provided by jazz singer Mami Suzu… oh, you get the idea. The association also released a Suzuki creed, which members are expected to follow.
1. Take pride in the Suzuki name
2. Call yourself by your full name
3. Address your fellow Suzukis warmly, using their first names
4. Don’t abuse the trust of your fellow Suzukis
5. Make a point of worshipping at shrines
6. Finish every meal without leaving a single grain of rice behind
7. Patronize Suzuki-run businesses
8. Support the Suzukis of the sports and entertainment worlds
9. Show your love for Hama-matsu, a.k.a. Suzuki Central
10. Relish the Suzuki life
