Ballet dancers from the National Ballet of Japan bust out of their classical straightjackets to try their hand at contemporary dance. Three dancers choreograph three very different works. Kimiho Hulbert presents Almond Blossoms, set to music by French Romantic composer Claude Debussy. Yuzo Ishiyama offers Qwerty, a multimedia performance named for the widely used keyboard layout. Yukio Ueshima rounds out the program with Nat King Cole Suite, a large-scale production inspired by the music of the beloved 20th century American pop songsmith.
