Kamakura City Kawakita Film Museum presents a new exhibition, Actress / Director Kinuyo Tanaka, which explores the prolific film career of Kinuyo Tanaka, one of the most celebrated personalities in Japanese cinema. After making her film debut at the age of 14, Tanaka would boldly undertake diverse roles, styles, and genres. Not one to be daunted by the male dominated film industry, Tanaka would even make her directorial debut in the 1950s.
Of the 240 films she starred in and the 6 she directed herself, 12 will be shown in the exhibition. To capture the inner workings of the prolific artist, personal mementos of Tanaka will also be on display.
Where Chimneys Are Seen (煙突の見える場所) and Sandakan 8 (サンダカン八番娼館 望郷) will be screened with English subtitles.
