The Great Van Gogh Exhibition: Café Terrace at Night

The Great Van Gogh Exhibition arrives at the Ueno Royal Museum this summer with a rare opportunity to see Vincent van Gogh’s celebrated “Café Terrace at Night” in Tokyo. Organized in collaboration with the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands, the exhibition traces Van Gogh’s artistic development from his early Dutch paintings through his Paris years and into the vibrant works created in Arles.

The exhibition presents around 60 works alongside paintings from the Impressionist movement that shaped Van Gogh’s evolving style. The centerpiece is “Café Terrace at Night,” returning to Japan for the first time in nearly two decades. Visitors can also explore Van Gogh’s letters and contextual materials that reveal how the artist transformed personal struggle into bold experimentation with color and light.
