A celebration of Irish culture and sport, the Gaelic Athletic Association Sports Day is a family friendly event showcasing a variety of sports such as Gaelic football, tag rugby, hurling and more.
The main event this year is the Ned Kelly Cup match between the men’s GAA Gaelic Football team and the Tokyo Goannas men’s JAFL team, the GAA team has won 10 out of the last 11 matches so the Goannas will be looking for redemption in this match.
A first this year, the Japan women’s AFL team, the Mirais, will be also be competing against the GAA women’s team in an international rules match. The Mirais have been highly competitive in the Japan AFL and they will be looking to make a strong impression against the formidable GAA women’s team.
The Australian-owned pie shop, Punk Doily, will be selling steak and Guinness pies throughout the day and an after party is said to be taking place at a nearby venue after the event.
To quote the Tokyo Goannas “The day is a celebration of GAA sports and Irish culture in Tokyo. The Australians are just happy to support by losing the game every year.”
