Thousands of colorful fireworks explode over the Arakawa River during the Itabashi Fireworks Festival in Tokyo, illuminating the night sky above cheering crowds.

Itabashi Fireworks Display

Summer fireworks season returns to Tokyo on August 1 with the 2026 Itabashi Fireworks Festival. One of the capital’s biggest and most popular displays, the event lights up the banks of the Arakawa River from 19:00 to 20:30.

Expect plenty of spectacle. Organizers will launch around 15,000 fireworks over 90 minutes, including massive shells that fill the sky with color. One of the evening’s signature moments is the 700-meter Niagara Falls display, a dazzling curtain of sparks that stretches across the riverfront.

What makes this event unique is its scale. The Itabashi Fireworks Festival takes place at the same time as the Todabashi Fireworks Festival in neighboring Saitama. The two shows unfold on opposite sides of the Arakawa River, creating the impression of a single giant fireworks extravaganza. Visitors can enjoy both displays from either bank, making it effectively two festivals in one.

Those planning to attend should note a change to the venue layout. To improve safety and reduce congestion, organizers have moved the free seating area from its former downstream location to the upstream baseball field. Arrive early to secure a good viewing spot and settle in before the first fireworks launch.

With huge crowds, dramatic displays and a rare double-festival format, Itabashi remains one of Tokyo’s standout summer traditions.
