JONQUIL: An English-Language Musical in Tokyo
Tokyo International Players brings FUNFAIR’s Greek mythology musical to Shimokitazawa for its English-language premiere.
Tokyo International Players (TIP) presents JONQUIL: The Legend of Love and the Turning Seasons from Oct. 22–25, 2026. The production marks the musical’s English-language premiere.
Originally created in Japanese by Tokyo-based musical theater group FUNFAIR, JONQUIL draws on Greek mythology to explain the changing seasons. The story moves between the Surface World, Olympus and the Underworld.
Greek Mythology Takes the Stage in JONQUIL
The musical brings together familiar mythological figures including Hades, Persephone, Demeter, Hecate, Zeus and Cerberus.
Saori Gonoi wrote the book and lyrics. Music is by Ko Kamakura, Takachika Ehara, Mion Nazakura and Gonoi.
Original choreography is by NATSUKI and Georgia Ryder. Jazlaan Karshis translated the musical into English and directs the TIP production.
If you know the story of Hades and Persephone, parts of the premise will feel familiar. This production reshapes those mythological characters through an original musical created in Tokyo.
JONQUIL Showtimes and Tickets
JONQUIL runs for five performances at “Geki” Sho-gekijo in Shimokitazawa. The Saturday 1pm performance includes a post-show Q&A.
- Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7pm
- Friday, Oct. 23 at 7pm
- Saturday, Oct. 24 at 1pm and 7pm
- Sunday, Oct. 25 at 1pm
Tickets: ¥5,500 adults, ¥4,500 students
