Kumihimo and the Beauty of Japanese Color

Jul 17, 2026 at 3:30pm ~ Jul 17, 2026 at 4:30pm

This Kumihimo and the Beauty of Japanese Color workshop takes place at Tokyo National Museum. Guests gather in a small group, capped low enough that everyone gets real one-on-one time with the braid. Domyo, a kumihimo practitioner, leads the entire session in English. The pace stays calm and hands-on throughout.

Choosing Colors and Learning the Braid

The session opens with context. Domyo explains where braided cords show up across Japanese dress, armor, and ritual objects. Guests then choose their own colors for the project. Domyo walks through how each color and material feels in the hand before anyone starts braiding.

A live demonstration follows. Guests watch Domyo’s hand rhythm and the structure that holds a kumihimo braid together. That demonstration turns straight into practice. Guests build their own cord, with guidance at every step, and finish with a small braided object to take home.

A Living Japanese Craft at Tokyo National Museum

The workshop ties directly back to the museum’s own collection. Guests leave with a clearer sense of how kumihimo connects museum objects to a craft still practiced today. The roughly hour-long session works well for visitors with no background in textile arts, since Domyo explains every step in English from start to finish.
