The monthly English-language talk night returns to Shin-Okubo with presentations on digital security, mathematics and our connection to the universe.
Nerd Nite Tokyo #81: Prime and Sublime returns to Shin-Okubo on Sep. 18, 2026. This month’s speakers move between mathematics, technology, space and art over an evening of drinks and conversation.
Doors open at 7pm at Study Abroad Pub. Talks begin at 8pm.
Prime Numbers and Digital Security at Nerd Nite Tokyo
Paul Alexander Helminck presents “Shattered Screens, Swiped Cards and Prime Numbers: How Math Keeps You Safe.”
His talk explores how prime numbers connect with the technology people use every day. Helminck will look at mathematics behind digital security, card payments and smartphone interactions.
The presentation takes an abstract mathematical idea and traces its practical role in modern technology.
From Rocket Science to Art
The second speaker, Hippo Yam, approaches space from a different direction. Yam presents “A Rocket Scientist’s Experiment with Art: A Journey to Rediscover Our Connection with the Universe.”
Yam will discuss U-ART, the creative group he co-founded. Its work uses artistic experiences to explore how people perceive the universe and their place within it.
The presentation draws on Yam’s background in rocket science while shifting the focus toward creative practice.
An English-Language Talk Night in Shin-Okubo
Nerd Nite Tokyo has held monthly English-language events since 2016. Each edition brings speakers from fields including science, technology, art and culture.
The September event takes place at Study Abroad Pub in Shin-Okubo, one stop from Shinjuku Station. Drinks are available before and during the talks.
There will be no livestream for Nerd Nite Tokyo #81. Videos of the presentations are scheduled to be uploaded after the event.
